Honeoye Bare-Root Strawberry Plants (Spring 2026 Pickup)

Price range: $10.00 through $200.00

These strawberry plants are offered as a limited spring presale for local gardeners in the Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Pikes Peak, and surrounding mountain communities.

The plants are Honeoye bare-root strawberries sourced from a respected specialty nursery and selected for their reliability, flavor, and performance in our climate. This is the same variety I’m planting in my own garden this season.

Honeoye was developed at the Cornell Research Station in Geneva, New York, and is one of the most widely planted June-bearing strawberries in the country. It is an early-season, heavy producer with excellent flavor and strong cold hardiness. Hardy in Zones 3 through 8, Honeoye is a great fit for Colorado gardeners looking for an earlier harvest and dependable production.

If you want to stretch out your strawberry harvest, planting both Honeoye and Jewel is a great combination. Honeoye ripens earlier, and Jewel follows after, giving you a broader harvest window with two dependable June-bearing varieties.

Presales allow us to make plants available locally at the right time for planting, without shipping stress or delays.

Quick Planting Tips

Pre-soak roots — Soak bare roots in a bucket of water for 1–2 hours before planting, but no longer than 2 hours.

Sun & protection — Full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily. In our high-altitude climate, some afternoon protection can help reduce stress from intense sun, drying wind, hail, and birds. A simple hoop setup with 30–50% shade cloth works well here.

Spacing — Plant 12–18 inches apart in rows 3–4 feet apart, or in a grid pattern in raised beds.

Planting depth — this is critical! — Set the crown, where the roots meet the leaves, right at soil level. Too deep and it can rot. Too shallow and the roots may dry out. Dig deep enough that roots hang straight down and are not bent.

Watering — Water in thoroughly right after planting. In our region, consistent moisture is one of the biggest keys to success, especially with early heat, wind, and drought conditions. Strawberries generally need about 1–2 inches of water per week, but new plantings may need closer attention during dry spells.

Mulching — especially important here — In our climate, mulch is one of the best ways to protect your investment. A generous layer of clean straw helps hold moisture in the soil, keeps roots cooler, reduces weed pressure, protects plants from drying winds, and keeps berries cleaner. If you garden in a dry, high-altitude area, mulching is strongly recommended.

First year — Remove flower trusses for the first 4–6 weeks after planting. This helps the plants focus on root development and runner growth so you get a stronger patch going into Year 2.

Variety Notes

Jewel is especially known for its large berries, sweet flavor, and reliable production.

One thing to know about Jewel is that it appreciates consistent moisture, especially during active growth. If you are growing in raised beds, containers, or other faster-draining setups, be extra mindful about watering.

For gardeners who want a longer strawberry season, pairing Jewel with Honeoye is a great way to spread out the harvest.
