If you live at elevation, your fall garden gets planted in July. Wait until it feels like fall and you’ve missed the window. That’s the hard truth most garden calendars never tell you, because they’re written for places with 180-day seasons and gentle Octobers.
I’ve been growing food at 8,500 feet in Woodland Park for over 20 years, and in this live workshop I’ll walk you through exactly what I’m planting this month and why.
What we’ll cover:
THE WINDOW MATH. How to find your real first frost date, count backwards, and figure out what still has time at YOUR elevation, whether you’re at 6,000 feet in Colorado Springs or 9,000 feet up the pass. Hint: the days-to-harvest number on the seed packet is lying to you up here, and I’ll show you how to correct it.
WHAT TO PLANT RIGHT NOW. The vegetables that still have time, the ones that store for winter eating like carrots, beets, and winter radishes, and the specific varieties that have survived in my beds versus the ones that died.
STRETCHING THE SEASON. The frost cloth and row cover setup I actually use, what it costs, and how it buys you weeks of extra harvest. Plus the microclimate tricks, like why I have lettuce growing under my pine trees in the middle of July.
EATING FROM THE GARDEN IN WINTER. How I store carrots in the ground under mulch and dig them in December, which crops taste better after frost, and what to do with the harvest.
